À la toille

Knighthood & Chivalry DictionaryKnighthood & Chivalry Dictionary
joust held on either side of a barrier . Prior to the early 15th century, jousts were conducted in the open rather than on either side of a low wall, which made the event much more dangerous. The first reference found in chronicles is found in a pas d’armes held by Pierre de Bauffremont c. 1442, described in in Engerrand de Monstrelet's Chronique. See Chronique: The Journal of Chivalry #16 for a reprint of this encounter. Also known as the tilt.
