Knighthood & Chivalry DictionaryKnighthood & Chivalry Dictionary
A common war-tactic of the 14th century, a sort of slash-and-burn attack centering on the economic production of a region, designed to force the opponent to engage. The English used such tactics during the Hundred Years War against France and Spain, often with devastating effects on the citizenry, but with questionable strategic gains.

A burn and slash kind of war where the enemy army was lured to the field to protect the economic vitality of a region. It was used with great effect by the English under Edward III and the Black Prince during the Hundred Years War .
